Read for the Record
On Thursday, October 25, 2018, SLHDA classroom children, staff, and volunteers participated in “Read for the Record”. Read for the Record brings together millions of people each year in classrooms, libraries, community centers, and homes across the US. This annual campaign highlights the importance of building early literacy and language skills for every child, so that all children have the opportunity to enter kindergarten prepared to succeed. We reached out to area principals and volunteers inviting them to come into our classrooms to be guest readers for this event!
This year’s book, Maybe Something Beautiful by F. Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell, illustrated by Rafael López celebrates the magic that happens when a community comes together to create something special and bring about change. After hearing the story, our children created some beautiful murals and projects to help brighten up our world!!
The children at West Side 2 Head Start created a mural in their classroom after hearing the story “Maybe Something Beautiful”.
At Wallenpaupack North 2, a parent volunteer read to the children, then they went outside to “paint the town”!!!
North Pocono 2 PKC children had a visit from Jefferson Elementary Principal Ms. Castrogiovanni and were inspired to create a mural after hearing the story!

The School Resource Officer joined our Mid Valley Head Start classroom to share the story. The children then created a mural to make their hallway look more beautiful!!
After listening to the story, Home-based Early Head Start children and their parents decorated birds in the hopes of adding more color to our world!!
